The main reason most people come. Find a spot on the shore by 5 pm in winter, closer to 7 in summer.

Informal paths along the water and up the nearby slopes. Not marked, so stay where the ground is firm.
Getting away from the crowd
Almost everyone stays close to the parking and the boating point. Walk ten minutes along the shoreline in either direction and it gets quiet very quickly. The reservoir edge is long and uneven, with small coves, grassy slopes and rocky bits where you can sit and look across the water to the J&K hills.
Please be careful
There are no proper marked trails around most of the lake, and the water level goes up and down through the year depending on the dam. Stay on paths you can see clearly and keep away from banks that look loose or steep. Don't go into the water. It gets deep fast and you can't tell from the shore how it's moving.
Some parts around Ranjit Sagar Dam are restricted. If there's a board or a fence, respect it. The same goes for drones and taking photos of the dam itself where it's not allowed.
When it's quietest
- Weekday mornings before 10 am. Hardly anyone around and the light on the water is soft.
- February and March, when the sky is clear and it's nice to walk.
- Just after the monsoon, late September into October, when everything is still green.
- Avoid long walks in the middle of the day from April to June. There's very little shade.
Leave it clean
These spots are only nice because not many people go there. Carry a bag for your wrappers and bottles and bring it back with you, keep the music down, and don't light fires anywhere it isn't allowed.
