Tips for taking photos at Mini Goa

What makes this place work in photos is the mix of big open water, hills stacked one behind the other, and a lot of sky. You don't need expensive gear. Getting the timing right matters much more.

When to shoot

  • The first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset. Warm light, long shadows on the hills.
  • Stay 15 to 20 minutes after the sun goes down. On a good evening the water turns pink and purple.
  • In winter there's often mist on the water early in the morning. Worth the early start.
  • Midday light is flat and harsh. Use that time for boating photos and come back for landscapes later.

Some ideas for framing

Use the curve of the shore to lead into the photo, or put a boat in the frame so people can tell how big the water is. On a still morning, keep the horizon low and get the reflection of the hills. For couple shots and pre-wedding shoots, put the sun behind them at sunset and use a reflector, or even a second phone's torch, to light up their faces.

Gear and manners

  • A wide lens or your phone's 0.5x for landscapes. A zoom if you want those layered hill shots.
  • Keep a lens cloth handy. It gets windy by the water.
  • No drones near the dam or other sensitive areas. Check the rules before flying anywhere around here.
  • Ask before you photograph other families, especially kids.
